As South Africa celebrates Disability Rights Awareness Month, Khayalethu Gwaza from Ngcobo, under the Dr. AB Xuma Local Municipality, is proving that disability does not mean inability. Khayalethu, who uses a wheelchair, started his own shoemaking business last year.

He says being in a wheelchair has changed the way he thinks and for the better. “Being disabled does not mean you cannot do things. I think much better than before, and I believe in doing things for myself,” says Khayalethu.

He explains that he does not want help with how he moves around he values his independence but he is appealing to the government for a new wheelchair, as the one he currently uses is no longer suitable for the areas he travels to. Khayalethu’s business has already begun turning a profit, and he takes great pride in his work.

His brother, Litha Gwaza, says the family is proud of him and is also seeking support for a new wheelchair. “We love him because he doesn’t like staying indoors. He loves business, he doesn’t want to be a burden, and he helps us a lot at home,” Litha shared.

Residents of Ngcobo regularly support Khayalethu’s shoemaking business, inspired by his determination and positive attitude. Khayalethu encourages other people living with disabilities to take action and chase their dreams. “Wake up and do something you can achieve anything if you believe in yourself,” he says.
