Story: Nondumiso Mpaka

Dr AB Xuma Municipality has officially handed over certificates to Iingcibi (traditional surgeons) and amakhankatha (traditional attendants) ahead of the upcoming Summer Initiation Season. The certification ceremony forms part of efforts to ensure that those performing circumcision are fully prepared and qualified to carry out this important cultural practice safely.

The event was attended by government officials, parents, and local traditional leaders. According to municipal representatives, last year’s initiation season was conducted successfully, and this year’s preparations aim to maintain the same high standards.

Chiefs from various villages pledged their continued support to ensure that no initiate faces difficulties during the process. Chief Jongisizwe Xhathi highlighted the importance of cooperation among all stakeholders. “This work requires dedication from everyone involved. We, as traditional leaders, will be present throughout the process to provide guidance and support.”

The chiefs also play a crucial role in verifying and approving documents confirming that each boy is ready for circumcision.

Ingcibi Mr. Vitheka from Clackebury Village expressed his readiness to begin the season. “We are ready to start and will make sure that all the boys return home healthy. We appreciate the support from parents and promise to take good care of their children.” The ceremony ended with ingcibi and amakhankatha proudly displaying their new certificates.
