The Claim Back Our Komani committee, led by Bonke Mfenqe, has confirmed that it met with residents of Komani to plan a shutdown scheduled for Thursday next week.
According to the committee, the planned shutdown is aimed at opposing the installation of smart meters in Komani, a move that residents strongly reject. Community members say they were not properly consulted and fear that the smart meters will negatively affect already struggling households.
Residents also voiced their dissatisfaction with the way the Komani local government is being run. They allege that the Mayor, Cllr Madoda Papiyana, does not care about the people of Komani and has failed to listen to their concerns.
These complaints follow allegations that the Mayor ignored residents when they raised issues about poor service delivery in the city, including electricity, water supply and deteriorating infrastructure. Residents say their grievances have been repeatedly overlooked, leaving them feeling disrespected and excluded from decision-making processes.

Furthermore, the community has called for an opportunity to engage directly with the national Minister, Velinkosi Hlabisa, with the aim of formally handing over a petition. Residents hope the Minister will intervene and listen to their concerns, as they believe their voices have not been heard at municipal level.
The Claim Back Our Komani committee says the planned shutdown is intended to send a clear message that the people of Komani are frustrated by ongoing neglect and are demanding accountable leadership, meaningful engagement and improved service delivery.
