The Eastern Cape Legislature recently hosted a Commonwealth Women’s Parliament programme aimed at strengthening public participation and promoting civic education across the province.

The initiative provides a platform for communities to raise issues that directly affect them. A key highlight of the programme is the Disability Sector session scheduled for 12 March, which places special focus on people living with albinism.

Legislature spokesperson Mandlakazi Keleku said the primary objective of the session is to spotlight the challenges faced by individuals with albinism and to ensure their voices are heard. As part of preparations, officials have been visiting various districts to engage directly with affected communities and encourage their active participation.

Some participants living with albinism have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a rare opportunity to openly share their concerns and needs. Akhona Folokhwe from the Intsika Yethu Local Municipality said the engagement helped clarify several issues, particularly challenges related to accessing social grants and other government services.

Folokhwe also urged communities to end discrimination against people living with albinism, stressing that they need support, understanding and equal treatment.

Government departments including Health, Social Development and Education participated in the programme, reaffirming their commitment to improving service delivery and addressing the needs of people living with albinism throughout the province.
