The Eastern Cape Departments of Education and Health, in partnership with the Eastern Cape AIDS Council, commemorated World Tuberculosis Day in Cala, in the Chris Hani East Education District.
The event, held at Khanyisa Special School, focused on raising awareness about tuberculosis among learners and educators, while supporting efforts to identify active TB cases and strengthen access to care and treatment.
Speaking at the event, Director for School Health, Safety and Learner Enrichment, Mr. Y. Plata, said the initiative aims to ensure that both learners and teachers are informed and that their health is prioritised to support improved academic outcomes.

A representative from the Department of Health, Ms Fatuse, encouraged community members to get screened for TB as soon as they notice symptoms. She also commended the Chris Hani District for leading in the number of TB tests conducted.

The commemoration followed build-up activities at 14 schools in the district, including awareness campaigns and health education sessions. Learners from various schools also performed drama pieces to raise awareness about TB and challenge the stigma associated with the disease.
Officials say the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to curb the spread of TB and promote early detection and treatment within school communities.
